Kosovo’s Local Markets: A Colorful Feast for the Senses

Kosovo’s Local Markets: A Colorful Feast for the Senses

“When I visit a new place, I make sure that I visit local market and feel the life. Capture few moments and write a few lines.”-Suneeta Pandey. This quote changed my mind and I decided immediately that I should go in a local market and feel those vibes, worth feeling.

Today was quite an interesting day that I had. I visited the local market in Skenderaj and it was amazing to be in that environment, crowded and noisy but also colorful and with different kind of things. There were many different kinds of fruits and vegetables, homemade cheese and natural milk, at this time of the year on the local markets apparently are very frequent flower seeds, vegetable seeds and decorative and fruitful trees that can be planted in our yards or in the fields for those who try or plan to make a business out of them.

Moving on I was amazed with the variety of  gadgets and working tools that I saw. Lots of knives, flashlights (different sizes), hammers, axes, chains, chainsaws of different brands etc. I was amazed and happy that everyone who needs different kinds of tools they can find almost everything in a local market, a specially in this section. On the next section there were different kinds of clothes and shoes some were brand new but most of them were old.

Then came the section of repairers and wood sellers. Repair master was fixing some bicycles (it was a privilege watching the skills of fixing with so delicacy), another one was fixing a motorbike which apparently had lost one tire, wood sellers in the other hand were having difficult time to convince their buyers in buying their wood. And the last section was the section of livestock,  this section is divided in two parts, the part with small animals like chickens, ducks(normal ducks, Japanese ducks, etc), gooses, turkeys, rabbits, quails and some beautiful soft pigeons with different colors, worth mentioning are the different kinds of small birds of chickens and ducks for those who want to raise them at their homes. Seeing this it made me feel happy and full of joy because of the different voices and shapes and sizes you hear and see, like a colorful mosaic.

The second section of the local market is 2 or 3 kilometers outside the city, there you can find only cows, sheeps and goats, but turns out that nowadays it is not very frequent, because  according to the traders I talked to. They say that people don’t like going to this section of  local market anymore instead they choose to go directly to farms or to slaughterhouses. To reduce unnecessary expenses and wasting time.

But something that it was worth observing was how people were cheerful and happy, meeting with each-other, laughing and joking, and also learning the origin of the products that they were thinking of buying. In my personal genuine opinion it was worth every second I spent in the local market watching and feeling the cheerfulness and chit chatting  of people was just like a beehive filled with life. So I would recommend to everyone to go and have a memorable time for once in their life.
